It’s not just because of the calories in alcohol (one large glass of red wine is equivalent to five teaspoons of butter = 150 calories), it’s also due to the red light alcohol puts on your body’s lipid oxidation. In other words, alcohol stops your body burning fat.
Even if you only consume a couple of vodka and sodas (aka ‘the skinny bitch’ drink), it’s the after-effect that will inhibit your weight loss. This is why skipping dinner and boozing up doesn’t help you get shredded.
HOWEVER… a recent study shows overweight subjects still lost body fat whilst consuming one glass of red wine a night, on a low (1500) calorie-a-day diet. Moderation is key! But can you stop at one?
My recommendation is take a four week break from any alcohol; train hard and eat clean in that time until you’ve shifted a few kilos. Once you’ve seen results, you’ll be so motivated you may want to continue alcohol-free until you reach your goal weight. Or, you could re-introduce a single glass of wine some nights, as long as you can stop at one glass. Keep this up until you get to your goal weight.
Sure, there’s your sister’s wedding, that cocktail event at work, your birthday dinner… there is always some excuse to drink, but practice some willpower and you will reap the benefits. If it seems like a big sacrifice at the time, just remember, giving up a few cocktails is actually a first world luxury #firstworldproblems #realtalk #realitycheck #unnecessaryhashtags
